I have just bought a Nuvi 3790T and have downloaded maps to my computer and then to the SatNav. On Mapsource I can see the POI icons but cannot see any of them on the 3790T even when fully zoomed in. This is unlike the Nuvi 300 I had before.
I have set Map Detail to More and the Map View to 3D.
I also do not appear to be able to get 3D views of buildings ( I tried looking for the Gerkin in London as I have seen a shot of this in one of the reviews )
What am I doing wrong.
Thanks for any help.

Can you give a bit more detail about this process? Are you in Europe? Was this the free update map from Garmin for a new unit? If you downloaded first to the computer and then to the unit, you probably did not get the updated 3D map file - I think you only get this if you update the unit by direct download, it is not saved to the computer as MapSource has no use for it.I have ... downloaded maps to my computer and then to the SatNav.
Points of Interest is a term which, confusingly, has two meanings. There are the features such as restaurants and fuel stations you can 'find' in MapSource (and see in MapSource depending on the detail level selected) or on the unit and navigate to, whether or not you turn them into Waypoints/Favourites; these are not, in my experience, visible on the unit's map. Then there are user-defined Points of Interest - these are in a separate third-party file which you download to the unit with POI loader. Because these are not on the PC, they don't show in MapSource but do show on the unit's map if you have them switched on.- I am in the UK. I first did the free update ( I downloaded the UK maps only ) directly to the SatNav, used POI Loader to load some third party POI's and at that point found no POI Icons on the maps, neither the Garmin POI's or the third party ones ( I think some third party speed data is showing )
Yesterday I downloaded the maps to my computer and found the Garmin POI Icons showed up on the Mapsource map covering Europe
I used the MapInstall program to install the maps of France to my SatNav.
Again no icons.
Looking through the various forum threads it would appear that other Garmin SatNavs do not show these, so possibly it is a Garmin design feature.
Thanks for your help. - Unless you have an extremely slow connection to the internet, I suggest you re-download the entire map direct to the 3790T (make that choice in the Advanced menu of the download manager) - there's plenty of room on the unit for this, and you will have the 3D buildings showing and all the points of interest available.
There are issues with getting third-party speed cameras to install, show and give alerts on the 3790 - the simplest solution (if you want to use non-Garmin files) is (a) to remove the Garmin Cyclops sample files from the POI folder on the unit - back them up on the PC (b) use POI Loader in advanced mode and choose the destination - either the POI folder on the unit, or on a microSD card if you've got one in the unit (c) select both the options in the Alerts menu.
Also, no harm in registering the unit on Garmin.com and updating the firmware to 3.50 in myDashboard (unless you can get WebUpdater to work - it won't with mine). - I noticed this problem as well . On my 3790t only the custom poi's show on the map fully zoomed in...none of the mapsource poi's show unlike my other GPS's . It looks like maybe it will take a firmware update to solve this.... perhaps like the route download problem to/from Mapsource.
All my favorites show as well as the 3D buildings & custom poi's, but no mapsource poi's , so is this another bug in the 3790t ? - I've have a go at downloading the entire map set when my broadband is at a reasonable speed. Low speed due to overhead wires getting wet at the moment.
Funily enough I have had no problems with the third party speed cameras.
They show on the map and show speed alert when driving.
I've updated all the software. Did that via My Dashboard. Webupdater now say's I have all the latest software.
Thanks for help. - Just downloaded full europe map set.
Now have 3d buildings and also junction pictures
Thanks for help - POI display has 'evolved' on the Nuvi's. On older models, if you zoomed WAY in they would all show. Would be quite cluttered on a downtown street. Then there are a few models (8x0, 8x5 and 5000 series) that actually have menu's to select which POI's to show. No current model has this feature anymore.
On my 3790, POI's do not show even at the maximum zoom level. My 1350 was the same way. jdgwinnell is correct that the term 'POI' is ambiguous. I am talking about restaurants, gas stations and stores not showing. The 3790 is actually much better than any of the other newer models when it comes to showing map POI's, like town names, lakes, etc. - So, on the 3790, how does one search for restaurants and other POIs? Is it still possible?
- You can still search for them normally, they just are not displayed on the screen in any way so you can't search for them 'visually'.
- And after you search for a POI and start a route to it, that POI will become visible on the map.
